Day 1. Northern Lights Safari
After arriving in Tromsø Airport a bus will transfer you to your hotel. You now have most of the day off to either relax in your hotel or go experience the city of Tromsø. In the evening you will go on a Northern Lights Safari (at 18.15h, duration 5-7 hours). The tour starts early in the evening with a bus ride to one of the area's Northern Lights base stations. From here an experienced local English-speaking guide will lead you in the hunt for the Northern Lights. Based on experience, wind direction and the latest weather forecasts, the base with the greatest likelihood of clear skies is chosen, thereby giving you the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights. At the base there are warm shelters, toilet facilities, tripods and thermal winter suits for use if your own attire is insufficient to keep you warm. At the base you will also be served a hot soup made according to local food traditions, as well as hot cocoa, coffee, tea and the sweet traditional, local cake "lefse". If the weather should change and it gets cloudy during the evening, we'll finish our soup and drinks and move on to another place in search of clear skies.
Day 2. Reindeer Sledding and Sami Culture
Today you can once again go experience the beautiful city of Tromsø on your own during the day, but in the evening a true winter wonderland adventure awaits. The Northern Lights Evening with Reindeer Sledding and Sami Culture starts at 17.45 and has a duration of 4-5 hours. You'll visit the Sami, the native population who has lived in the area for thousands of years, where you will get an exciting insight into the Sami culture – what it once was, what it is today and what expectations the Sami have for the future. You'll learn about the Sami and their traditions by listening to stories and the traditional Sami folk song "joik", and by tasting a warm traditional Sami meal (bidos). During the evening we've also arranged a reindeer sled ride through the beautiful winter landscape, and if we're lucky, we'll see the Northern Lights dancing in the sky above us during the ride. Reindeer sledding is the oldest form of transport in the North and it still makes up an important part of the Sami culture today, meaning that the reindeer have always been a very appreciated animal among the Sami people. During the evening you will also have the chance to get up close and personal with these celebrated animals when it's feeding time for the reindeer calves. It's possible to borrow thermal winter suits if your own attire is insufficient to keep you warm.
Day 3. Optional whale safari
Todag you have the option of purchasing the amazing whale safari. The safari starts at 08.30h (with a duration of 3-6 hours) and you'll get to experience these big marine mammals in their rightful element. From October to February, the coast outside Tromsø is visited by both Humpback whales, Killer whales, Harbour porpoise and sometimes even Fin whales who come to these waters to feed on herring. You are invited on board for an unforgettable experience. On board, a knowledgeable guide will show films about the whales and provide information about the scenic surroundings you see along the way. With the fast-sailing catamaran, we aim to spend around 90 minutes out on the waters with the whales. On board, it is possible to purchase hot meals, snacks and cold drinks. If you decide not to purchase the Whale Safari, you have the day free to explore Tromsø on your own. In Tromsø you can enjoy a visit to a museum, do some shopping and simply just relax. In the evening we will enjoy a lovely 3-course dinner at the hotel.
Day 4. Cable car ride
Today we have included a cable car ride up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen, where you can enjoy the stunning panoramic views of Tromsø and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords. Storsteinen is also a great place to see the Northern Lights during winter. The cable car runs from Solliveien, approx. 45 minutes’ walk or 15 minutes by bus from Tromsø city centre, between 10.00-23.00h. Up on Storsteinen you will find the Fjellstua restaurant which serves delicious dishes based on local produce, and it's a great place to enjoy a meal or snack while you take in the view. In the evening we will enjoy a 3-course dinner at the hotel.
Day 5. Going home
After a great few days of experiences it's now time to go home. A bus will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the airport so you can go back to Denmark.
NB: On the excursions where food is served, a vegetarian option is available on request. The vegetarian option must be requested at the time of booking.
